From RootsWeb...
"RootsWeb was founded in 1996 and has had an extraordinarily long and
successful run, outlasting nearly every other website originating in those
early days of the internet. RootsWeb has far exceeded its founders' expectations
regarding longevity and its central role in creating an online genealogy community,
but maintaining RootsWeb forever is not a viable long-term solution.
We recognize the valuable genealogical information RootsWeb offers and
are working to keep that community knowledge alive by migrating it
to Ancestry and other places throughout 2023."

bullet  General Notes:

NOTES:
Osceola, born as William "Billy" Powell, became an influential leader of the Seminole Indians in Florida. Of mixed parentage, Creek, Scots-Irish, and English, he was raised as a Creek by his mother, as the tribe had a matrilineal kinship system. They migrated to Florida when he was a child, with other Red Stick refugees, after their defeat in 1814 in the Creek Wars.

Native American Seminole leader Osceola was born in 1804 in Georgia, near the Chattahoochee River. His father was a British trader and his mother the daughter of a Creek chief. Grew up in northern Florida, where he became a Seminole leader. War chief of the 1835 Seminole War. Captured two years later under a flag of truce. Imprisoned in Fort Moultrie, South Carolina, where he died in 1838 after refusing the white man's medicine for a throat infection. Buried near the entrance of Fort Moultrie, Charleston, South Carolina.
