Starting in the mid-1800s, this majestic building housed the Lawrence & Chapin Iron Works and, much later, became Vermeulen Furniture.   When Vermeulen moved to Portage Road, just north of I-94, National City Bank purchased the building to house office space.  Vermeulen later moved to Mall Drive where it failed to succeed.
