Missia’s Bar served
the down and out, and workers of the Kalamazoo area. Some people
remembered 2 earlier locations on N. Burdick Street, including “Missia’s
Little Red Barn.” A 1960’s Kalamazoo telephone book lists “Missia’s Bar
and Grill” at 313 N. Burdick. Racially integrated, the downtown Missia’s
of the 1980’s and 1990’s boasted a jukebox evenly dividing R and B and Country
music. A sign was put up in front proclaiming Missia’s, a “workingman’s
Bar” at a time when students and slackers started hanging out there.
During its last days in business in the early 1990’s, Missia’s hosted
local bands and a great atmosphere.
