MAPS - EARLY FREDERICK COUNTY, MARYLAND

Western 1748 - Western Maryland Maryland
Early Frederick County - 1748

On July 4, 1760, Maryland and Pennsylvania settled the boundary dispute between
the two provinces with the signing of an elaborate document. The final settlement
came with the acceptance of the Mason-Dixon Line in 1767, which took a large portion
of land previously claimed by Maryland (and Pennsylvania) and added it to Pennsylvania.

[from John Ashbury's History Moments]

HUNDREDS MAPS

Hundreds were formed on sections of land with 100 "taxables" (males, age 16 and older and male and female slaves, age 16 and older). Unoccupied land could be included in these 'tracts' and each was given a distinct name and had a constable assigned to keep order, much like later Sheriffs.

When first established, it probably consisted of a greater area, but as time passed and the population increased, more Hundreds would be established from it and the old Hundred would decrease in size. (This may well be similiar to the townships one finds in Pennsylvania today.) These Hundreds were later replaced with districts which usually were named after the town it included and/or a district number.

In 1777, tax assessments were made on the value of the real and personal property of the head of the household and the "taxables" method was no longer used. The Hundreds were gradually phased out and Districts replaced them.
