By simply connecting with the Web site, you can read the text. However, with a little additional effort, you can download a couple of software programs that allow you to: (1) display the text in SGML format and (2) view the images that are imbedded. Even without these program enhancements though, just reading the text manuscripts is a wonderful experience. The materials are arranged by state. You can view a map with the states highlighted and then click on the state whose stories you would like to read. A list of the stories' titles is listed. You can then click on a story and it will be downloaded for you to view. The stores are typically between 2,500 and 15,000 words in length. There is also a search facility available that allows you to search for keywords or names.
As a bonus, from the "Voices of the Thirties" collection, there are some digitized sound files containing portions of some interviews that were captured on tape recorders. Depending on your Web browser, you may or may not be able to listen to these recordings. All of these materials provide an insight into the life and times of American citizens during the Depression. I urge you to partake of this wonderful feast at the Library of Congress Web site. Regardless of whether you find an ancester here or not, these stories weave a wonderful tapestry of historical insight for you. Read a couple every day. I hope you'll be enjoying them as much as I am. Happy Hunting! George Copyright 1998 George G. Morgan and copied from Ancestry Daily News. This column was originally published in the Genealogy Forum on America Online - Thanks George!!!!

Bureau of Land Management (BLM), General Land Office (GLO) Records Automation Website - This site provides live database and image access to more than two million Federal land title records for the Eastern Public Land States dating back to 1820. This site offers researchers a source of information on the initial transfer of land title from the Federal Government to individuals. In addition to verifying title transfer, this information will allow the researcher to place an individual (patentee) at a specific location (legal land description) in time (signature date). These records can be accessed at http://www.glorecords.blm.gov. Although the definition for "Eastern Public Land State" isn't provided, the states included are: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Indiana, Louisana, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Ohio, and Wisconsin. This site is rather amazing in that it is free, easy to access, contains valuable information, and is run by the Government. borrowed from [email protected] mail list - author unknown

First Name Basis - Since family names tend to be much more important to genealogists than given names, very few name indexes are organized on a first name basis. This is unfortunate for some genealogists, as first name searches are useful in attempting to trace the maiden names of female ancestors and in searching for ancestors with very distinctive given names. First Name Basis is designed to assist those using this creative technique to locate the missing branches in their family tree.

Ancestry Hometown - From humble beginnings in early 1996, this site has grown to become one of the largest storehouses of genealogical data on the Internet. Contains a huge collection of online, searchable genealogical databases, Social Security Death Master File, Periodical Source Index (PERSI), a Geographic Reference Library, and several other collections, as well as in-depth "how to" articles, and a free daily e-mail newsletter. Most databases are available to search for free for a specific time period, afterwhich individuals can subscribe for a monthly fee.
Sites with Genealogical Source Material - Alan Tupman has created this resource as an alternative to the majority of genealogy sites by bringing genealogists and data closer together with a minimum of ads, images, and ego. One of the site's most tempting resources is the list of links to over 100 ship passenger lists that are organized chronologically and by country of arrival. Lists of passengers from Ireland to the US are particularly abundant, and have their own separate list.
