Four Cemeteries on |
The following data was submitted by Harold E. Brown of Bath, ME and appeared in Downeast Ancestry, Volume 3, No. 1, Jun 1979, p 13. McMahan Island is on the east side of Georgetown in Sheepscot Bay, about two miles long and 3/4 of a mile wide. It had a permanent population from the late 1700s to the early 1900s; mostly fishermen. There was a school and there are at least four cemeteries. It is now a summer colony with no year-round residents. The individuals mentioned on the gravestones are NOT listed in the Georgetown Vital Records.
This cemetery is located near the north end of the island on the Old Apple Orchard path. There are many unmarked field stones, some of which are illegible.
