Moses Little was for many years, early to mid
1800s, a Justice of the Peace in Windham. Several
years ago some of his judicial papers were found in
the attic of his Windham home and donated to the
Windham Historical Society.
The majority of the papers are Writ of Summons
and/or Attachment, some with the follow-up
Execution(s) [of payment], called Exons. These
Summons are for appearance before a Justice of the
Peace [usually Moses Little] to settle the debt for
which papers have been filed. Many of the Summons
and/or Exon papers also contain the original signed
promissory note, statement of account and/or other
information pertaining to the debt. Other papers in
the Moses Little Collection include a group of signed
Recognition of Debt and signed Complaint and Arrest
Warrants. On the reverse side of the Recognition of
Debt may be found an explanation of payment or a date
for which an Exon was issued when payment was not made
on time.
