Came to Andover in 1870 and bought a small piece of land of J. W. Bodwell, near the village, and put up a work shop with a house over it, and steam power, and had all the work he could do at carpentering and boat building, blacksmithing, etc. His house and shop caught fire from the steam engine and were destroyed. But he was well insured, and soon built a new shop, and a very good new house. Removed to Bridgeton in 1873, to Gorham, ME in 1874, and back to Andover in 1877.

(Obituary from the Rumford Falls Times, December 12, 1906)
The funeral services of Fernando Thomas were held from his late residence on Wednesday, Dec. 5 at 11 A.M., attended by Rev. Mr. Pinkerton of Rumford. The Masons had an impressive service, a delegation being present from the Blazing Star Lodge, Rumford Falls, of which the deceased was a member. Members of the Joseph Colby Post were present. Mr. Thomas was on Company D of the 12th Maine Regiment in our civil War.
There were beautiful flowers contributed by the King’s Daughters and Knights of Pythias. Mr. Thomas had lived in Andover since the war. He was a boat builder by trade and later an undertaker. His wife [Hattie C. Bacon] died about five years ago. He leaves two brothers and two sisters, also two sons [Fred and Granville] of which one is in the West.
