Misc. Notes
Abigail’s parentage is debated. Was she Abigail Allen, daug. of Samuel Allen and Margaret French Lamb? Or was she Abigail Penniman aughter of James Penniman and Lydia?

The following note leads one to believe it was Abigail Allen who is recorded as an alternate name herein. However, the second following note is more convincing that John's wife was Abigail Penniman.
1. “From "John Cary, The Plymouth Pilgram", Seth Cary, 1911, Section 2, page 63:
"John Cary, son of John (sec.1) b. Duxbury, Nov. 4, 1645; m. Abigail, dau. of Samuel Allen and his second wife Margaret (French, Lamb) at Bridgewater, Dec. 7, 1670.
In 1680 he removed to Bristol, where he resided till his death in 1721. The deed to his land in Bristol was granted Sept. 29, 1680. The first meeting of the people and the naming of the town was Sept. 1, 1681, and John Cary with his brother David were present. He became a prominent man in the town, and was elected a Deacon of the Church at its organization, and held office till his death. He was one of the first 'raters' of the town, and appointed Nov. 10, 1681; in 1694 was recording officer of the county court. His wife was also of good family; her father, Samuel Allen, came from Bridgewater, England, to Braintree, MA in 1630. In 16 took the oath of Allegiance, and was Town Clerk, Selectman, Survey or of highways, Constable, and served as Deputy three times. He and his son Samuel, who also settled in Bridgewater in 1660, both fought in King Philip's War. For eight generations this family has be identified with the best political and religious life in New England.
John Cary d. July 14, 1721, his estate amounting to L700 ; the will of his wife was recorded in 1729."
2. From "The American Genealogist (TAG), January 1990 and our Baran source:
Lydia Eliot Penniman Wight bequeathed £10 "to my daughter Abigail Carie". The will was probated February 12, 1730, administered by her son Benjamin and son-in-law Samuel Howland. It mentions sons Eleazer, James, Benjamin and Josiah; only daughter Abigail Howland; Jemima Cary, daughter of Josiah Cary; granddaughter Abigail Cary , daughter of John deceased; granddaughter Abigail Cary, daughter of Eleazer Cary; granddaughter Abigail Cary, daughter of James Cary; granddaughter Abigail Cary, daughter of Benjamin Cary; granddaughter Abigail Howland, daughter of Abigail Howland; and grandson John, son of John Cary.
Abigail Penniman, b. Braintree, 27 Dec. 1651, d. Bristol, Mass. (n ow RI), 25 June 1729, aged 79 y; m. John Cary. Abigail was surnam "Carie" in the will of her mother, and she is apparently the Abigail Cary of Bristol whose will, dated 7 May 1722 and proved 12 Fe 1729/30, mentions "My husband Deacon John Cary deceased." John Cary and Increase Robinson, the spouse of Sarah Penniman, were among the commisioners who divided the estate of Lt. John Hall of Taunton, spouse of Hannah Penniman, on 29 Dec. 1694. John Cary of Bristol deeded land in Bridgewater to the heirs of Increase Robinson, "my brother-in-law," deceased, on 25 May 1704. The mar. of John Cary Jr. and -- on 7 Dec. 1670 is recorded in Bridgewater. A duplicate entry in the pub. VRs from a private source made many years later calls the wife Abigail Allen. The above provides sufficent evidence that she was actually Abigail Penniman.
