The Owl has faithfully made the attempt to solve the problem as to
the parentage of Lyman L. Wing of Monmouth, but at this writing, we
have no confirmed belief upon the subject. His daughter, Mrs. Sarah
Elizabeth Luce, writes us that her grandfather's name was Reuben, and
that her grandmother's name was Sarah; that her grandfather Reuben
died when her father was about twelve years of age; that Shubael and
Stephen Wing were her father's half brothers. Confirmatory of this,
is a record in the "Town History of Wayne" showing that the intentions
of marriage of Reuben Wing and Sally Robinson, both of Wayne, were
published April 21, 1812. And in further confirmation of this are the
statements of two or three of the great-grandchildren of Reuben and
Joseph (brothers of Shubael and Stephen) that the father of Shubael,
Reuben, Stephen and Joseph, married a second time late and life, and
that this marriage caused an estrangement in the family between the
father and sons.
Thomas L. Wing, son of Shubael, Jr., states that Lyman was a son of
one of his grandfather Shubael's brothers.
John Ammi Wing, son of Joseph, states that his grandfather's name was
Stephen and that one of the children of Joseph by his first marriage
was named Lyman.
But who was this Reuben Wing who married Sally robinson in 1812? It
was certainly not Reuben, the brother of Shubael, Stephen and Joseph.
Mrs. Matilda A. Pratt, aged 72, has a distinct recollection of her
grandfather Reuben and of her grandmother, Huldah Burgess, the former
of whom died Nov. 9, 1851, aged 76.
Lyman L. Wing was born in the year 1816. If, indeed, he was a half
brother of Shubael Wing, born in 1766, a period of 52 [sic] years
