Misc. Notes
Came to Andover, Oxford, Maine, USA in 1792 and selected for his farm Lot No._, West side, the lot south of his brothers. He was a cooper by trade but did not do much at that business here. He had a large and good farm but was not much of a farmer nor manager. He lived here several years, sold out, and moved to Norway, Oxford, Maine, USA. He did not succeed very well there, and after living there five years he came back to his old farm in Andover, Oxford, Maine, USA where he and his wife spent the remainder of their days. As a man he was very different from his brother Jonathan. He was kind and social in his feelings, and to his family, very quick and passionate, but not revengeful, always appearing to be sorry after giving vent to his feelings. He read but little, and his literary acquirements were very small. He never interested himself in politics, or even in town affairs. I do not know of his ever holding a town office. He was very industrious and economical. I would here say that Mr. Phillip Abbott was in the habit of sleeping whenever he was not at work, whether in the house or out-of-doors, he could not sit down at any time without dropping asleep, and he was frequently known to go to sleep and drop his tools while at work; this was one reason why he did not read more. He had a large family but did not do much for their improvement or education, in fact, they grew up without much home instruction. The family were rather rude. As a father and companion he was kind, affectionate, and social when awake. He lived well, but did not accumulate much property. He was a member of the church here and a very constant attendant at church. Elizabeth Fry ( ), his wife, was quiet, inoffensive woman without much energy or cultivation. As a companion and mother, kind and affectionate, but not with much family government. She was very punctual managing her household affairs. (Copied from the Andover Memorials by Agnes Blake Poor)
