Frank Thomas Dies Thursday at His Home
Well Known Lumberman Was Ill But Two Days
Frank Pierce Thomas, 83, retired lumberman and prominent citizen of Andover, and well-known throughout this section of Maine, died Thursday, March 22, at his home on Main Street, after a two day illness.
Mr. Thomas was born in Byron, November 8, 1850, the son of Merrill and Sarah Stockbridge Thomas, both of whom were born in Byron. Coming to Andover when a young man, he engaged independently in the lumbering business. In connection with his business, he, with his brother, A. W. Thomas, owned and operated the “Old Andover House” in Andover. [A hotel located where the Andover General Store now stands]
Mr. Thomas was widely known throughout this section and in the early days of Rumford was associated with many of the pioneers and their activities. He is remembered as having the contract to furnish lumber for building the first log dam known as Middle Dam near the former Morse’s Mill, the timber being cut from the hillside back of where the old passenger station stood. He was also connected to the late Hugh Chisholm in the timberland operations for the Otis Falls Mills of Mr. Chisholm later acquired by the International Paper Co. When Mr. Chisholm organized the International Paper Co. he served as division superintendent of lumber operations.
For a number of years he served as president and general manager of the American Realty Co., the woodland operations of International Paper Co. and following his connections with this company he served for the past 20 years in an advisory capacity for the woodland department of the Oxford Paper Company. During the early part of that period he had charge of the Canadian timberlands.
Mr. Thomas had been president for a number of years and director for a longer period of the Androscoggin Log Driving Association, and also served as manager of the drive for many years.
Since 1918 and continuing for a quarter century, Mr. Thomas had served as a director of Rumford National Bank.
Mr. Thomas was a man of strict integrity, honorable in his dealings, a kind husband, a loving father and a conscientious friend. Many will remember him for his kind ministrations to them in their hour of need. He was interested in the many activities of the town and was president and director of the Andover Water Company for many years. He was a member of Cabot Lodge, K. of P., Andover, a member of the Royal Arch Chapter and Blazing Star Lodge, F. & A. M., a charter member of the Strathglass Commandery, Rumford.
He is survived by his wife, who was Lizzie Hewey, Andover, and also two sons, Harry M. of Andover and Herbert A. of Northeast Harbor, and a daughter, Mrs. Herbert Learned, of Andover, and nine grandchildren
The funeral, which was held at the Congregational Church Saturday at 2 P. M. was largely attended. The bearers were Charles Ripley, I. E. Mills, Chester and Clayton Sweatt, Waldo Merrill and Arthur Lang. Interment was in Woodlawn Cemetery.
