http://www.jackson-flint.org/Pedigree/jackson/aqwg149.htm#2872Early Mass. marriages V2 p33; Histories of Middleboro and Carver, Mass.;
Mass. VR; Deed in Bristol Co. Courthouse. It had four children, Sally,
Elijah, Daniel and Ansel. Further research in probate records and more
recent accounts revealed seven more children and also a 2nd marriage
for Sarah, the mother, which ended in divorce. The 1790 census shows
Elijah Lucas in Middleborough with 4 males under 16 and 2 females. This
suggested another son, possibly born before Sarah as there were three
years between their marriage date and Sarah's birth date. In the 1800
census Elijah Lucas is in Bristol Co. pg 292 with 2 males btw 10 and 16,
two btw 16 and 26, 1 btw 26 and 45, 3 females under 10, 1 btw 16 and
26 and 1 btw 26 and 45. This was further evidence of another son and of
four daughters.
Sarah, the mother, is not shown in the 1810 census index but Ansel,
Daniel and Elijah are in Freetown pg 254. There is a woman over 45 in
the 1810 census of the family of Daniel Lucas in Freetown which could
be his mother. Then there is a record of marriage of Sarah Lucas widow
and Calvin Hathaway 13 Sep 1810 at Freetown. "Hathaways of America"
says she divorced him in 1816 charging he had left the country. There is
a Sarah Hathaway in 1820 census of Fairhaven, pg 526.
Deaths of Freetown show a Thomas, 80, son of Elijah, d. 13 Dec1859, and
Thomas Lucas was the informant in the record of intent to marry shown
in Freetown records for Daniel Lucas and Nancy Burt.
In the alphabetical probate records of Bristol Co., (FHL 575156), is a
guardianship record of 4 Aug 1806 appointing guardians for Elijah's son
Ansel who was 18 and a daughter Rebeckah who was 16. There is a
Rebecca in the IGI married 22 Feb 1807 at Freetown to John Burt. This
is probably her even though she would be only 17 years old because there
is an 1825 Bristol Co. deed (117-171) from John and Rebecca Burt to
Charles Crapo.
In "Middleboro, Mass, Deaths" is record of death of a "child of Elijah
Lucas, 'unwell from birth' 14 Dec 1792, age 9 mo." (from Rev Barker's
records). The other four children, Mary, Betsey, Azuba and Jacob, were
found in another guardianship record following that of probate record of
Elijah's estate (FHL 575156). The mother, Sarah, was appointed guardian
and it stated they were under 14. The sequence of their births is a
matter of guess. A quit claim deed (Taunton 150-113) of 22 May 1835
shows Jacob Lucas of Shirley, Somerset, Maine, along with Azuba and
Winslow Birden of Willington, Somerset, Maine, and Mary Staples of
Taunton, Mass, selling for $30 about 9 acres of land in New Bedford to
Ansel Lucas. Azuba's marriage was found in the IGI, Mary's record of
intent in Taunton Vital Records. There is a probate record in the
alphabetical records of Bristol probates of an Allen Staples who died
1833 whose wife Mary signed a statement declining to be administrator
and stating the children were minors but said no more about them. No
guardianship record was found. There is record of a marriage which could
be that of Betsey 25 Oct 1821 in Freetown to Taber Wodell and the IGI
contains a marriage which could be hers, 24 Oct 1822 at New Bedford to
Jeremiah Mayhew. A record of death was found in Westport, Bristol,
Mass, of a Betsy Woddell, wife of Tabor, died of consumption 2 Apr 1847
age 47. Nothing more has yet been found concerning them.
No Jacob Lucas was found in Massachusetts nor Maine IGI nor anywhere
in either census. No other record has yet been found concerning him.
!Elijah fought in the Revolutionary War at Marshfield and served other
places in the militia. He and his wife were members of the First Church
of Christ in Middleborough 5 Apr 1789. Sarah's parents belonged to the
same church. The church record says they removed to Freetown but
didn't give the date.
A Bristol Co deed (Taunton 72-2) shows he bought 80 acres in Freetown,
part of the 14th and 15th lots of the Pocasset Purchase, 1 Feb 1793,
from Gersham and Betty Howland, for 135 pounds. He was called a
yeoman of Middleborough, Plymouth Co. Another deed (Taunton 74-14),
dated 19 Feb 1794, says he is of "New Freetown" and he buys from Job
Pierce for 45 pounds land which is described as part of the 15th lot of
the Pocasset Purchase, about 5 acres and 100 rods. In another deed of 7
June 1796 (Taunton 75-205) he is called husbandman and buys 53 acres
and 35 rods from Jacob Tabor for $500 and 1 Sep 1797 (Taunton 79-60)
he buys another 99 acres and 22 rods from Benjamin Lawrence for $500.
Further deeds show a strange transaction. On 1 Mar 1806 (Taunton
85-535 and 539) Elijah sold the land he bought from Gersham Howland
plus land he bought from Silas Valler 31 Mar 1801 and part of that he
bought from Job Pierce with all buildings thereon to Moses Robbins for
$1700 and the land he bought from Benjamin Lawrence, all the land he
bought from Jacob Tabor and another piece of land he bought of John
Nelson and others on 1 Feb 1800 plus some stock to Peter Crapo for
$1410.83, all of which they sold for the same amounts to Elijah, Jr,
Ansel and Daniel Lucas 3 Mar 1806 (Taunton 87-91).
Four months later, Elijah died intestate and his wife was administrator
of his estate which amounted to $575.53 in personal property and seven
acres of land and a small house valued at $50. One item of interest in
the inventory was an "obligation upon Benjamin Austin for 6 tons & 22
feet ship timber dated 19 Oct 1805 estimated at $65". There was also
50 feet of thick white oak plank, 200 feet of 2 inch white pine plank and
800 feet refuse pine boards listed. All this would seem to indicate a
lumber business.Early Mass. marriages V2 p33; Histories of Middleboro and Carver, Mass.;
