Abbie and Elisha had only one child, Sampson Augustus. Abbie was very proud of her son and determined to see that he got an education. She helped him through Dartmouth College.
"The widow, Abigail Brett Reed, married for her second husband Emerson Pitts of Livermore Falls, Me., Nov. 19, 1854, when they moved west to Roscoe, Ill., where he tried farming for a year or two, but moved back to Buckfield, Me., where Mr. Pitts obtained an interest in a grist mill and the son, Sampson, gained an academic education and by his mother's perseverance he fitted for college at the Hebron, Me., Academy, and entered Dartmouth college." --Axel H.
