Her first husband, John Bursley was an "old planter" who settled on the coast before the Puritans arrived in New England. In 1631 and 1632 he received land patents from the Council for New England with Sir Fernando Gorges for 12,000 acres on the east side of Aquamontiquos River. He was a trader with the eastern Indians and had an establishment at Kittery, ME and trading houses at other places on the coast. He was extremely wealthy for his time. He was a Freeman 19 Oct 1630, and a deputy to the General Court May 1636. In 1639 he moved to Barnstable with his father-in-law, Rev. Joseph Hull.
