Misc. Notes
Edward Dillingham, born probably Scituate, Mass. about 1724; died
Freeport, Maine, 15 March 1812; married 4 August 1751, Marcy Doty, "of
Scituate"; died Freeport, Maine, 4 April 1812; probably daughter of
Samuel and Mary (Cobb) Doty or Doten.
Edward was probably the oldest son of Melatiah and Mary (Curtis)
Dillingham, although no record of his birth has been found, The
earliest record is of his marriage in 1751 to Marcy Doty. The history
of Hanover, Mass. by Barry, states, "Melatiah and Edward Dillingham
lived in Hanover in 1754 and were shipbuilders." They were also listed
among householders in 1755. Land sales in 1784 and 1788 in Hanover by
Joshua, half-brother of Edward, refer to the dwelling, "where Edward
Dillingham formerly lived."
In 1783 records of the Friends' Society, Pembroke Monthly
Meeting, contain the report of Edward Dillingham's removal to the
Falmouth, Maine Monthly Meeting. Edward and Marcy appear to have been
members of the household of their son, Samuel in the first federal
census, 1790, Freeport, Maine. Edward and Samuel were both blacksmiths
and family tradition says that they contracted with the stage line to
shoe the stage horses when they stopped in Freeport on the post road.
