Married June 11, 1840; residence, Bryant's Pond, Me. He was a teacher of public schools twenty-five years; an ardent supporter of Masonry, having served in every office in the Lodge and as District Deputy Grand Master in his Masonic district.
He was a member of the State Legislature in 1851, 1852, and again in 1869; one of the committee reporting the famous Maine Liquor Law; an active worker in the temperance cause, and a total abstainer for fifty years.

He was re-elected and at the end of his second term he returned to his farm in Woodstock. He was the son of Merrill and Lucy (Felt) Chase, and was born June 15, 1819. He married Lucy, daughter of Jonathan Cole, and grand-daughter of Eleazer Cole, an early resident in Paris. He served in the Maine Legislature before he came here and also after his return to Woodstock. He has also held various other positions of trust. He has had three children. The oldest, Alden Fitzroy, graduated at Middletown (Conn.) University, was Professor at Kent's Hill several years, and is now at the head of the East Maine Conference Seminary at Bucksport. Aquilla Montrose, the second son, is a printer at Bryant's Pond and the proprietor of the first printing office in that town. The only daughter, Estella Ophelia, is the wife of Rev. Albert A. Ford.
