Burial stone inscription, from Old Village Burial Ground, Temple, NH:
Mr. Eldad Spafford, January 6--1806, in sixty-second year.  "Hero of 1776."  [S. A. R. Marker.]  "When I stood firm, robust and strong God called my soul away." -- changed death year from 1809 to 1806 on 7 Jan. 2010.

Sergeant in Enoch Hale’s Regiment of Militia in the State of New Hampshire, who marched from the Counties of Cheshire & Hillsborough at the requisition of Major General Gates to reinforce the Army at Ticonderoga. Engaged October 22nd. Returned Nov. 16th, 1776.
