Care must be taken to distinguish between two first cousins named John Cole and almost the same age - one b 16 Mar 1660 son of James Cole Jr (b 1626), the other b 15 May 1660 son of Hugh Cole (b abt 1630).

Place of death: Plympton or Carver, MA = WFT V 03 # 1124: Captain Nathaniel Clark and wife Dorothy in parental affection sold on-half acre of land to "our son and daughter John and Susannah Cole of Plymouth," May 14, 1697. John Cole exchanged land with John Turkham, Oct. 7, 1710. Plympton MA was incorporated June 4, 1707. John Cole was among the first list of voters. Robert Ransom sold to John Cole fifteen acres of land on the north of brook out of Datys meadows. This seems to have been his homestead. His will, dated Mar 13, 1723 bequeaths all his property to his wife Susannah.

John Cole and Susannah Gray Cole are buried in Carver, MA; he died 1724 and she died 1727--so why would he have married again?? He wouldn't have! So John Cole, Sr. b. 16 Mar 1660 COULD NOT have been the John Cole m. Patience Barber in 1709!

Misc. Notes
From Plymouth, MA church records:
Susanna Cole (who was Grey) was on April 1: called before the church openly for fornication with John Cole before her marriage to him, she expressed some penitential words, & was laid under Admonition by the vote of the church, pronounced by the Elder & then seconded by the Pastour.

Note from Gray family history: “Susannah Gray. Born October 15/1668. She married John Cole, whose daughter Mary Cole married Isaac Wright, son of Richard & Hester (Cooke) Wright.” This would suggest that Susannah Gray married John Cole son of Hugh, rather than John Cole, son of James Cole, Jr.

According to Fred Johnson, Susannah Gray’s line connects to that of William the Conqueror. See his Henry 1 De Normady.pdf (934 pages) in possession of KCA.
