Misc. Notes
From David O. Cole via e-mail 21 Oct 2002:
Castine Normal School was after (instead of?) High School. I think it was like a 2-year prep school. From it, you could get a certificate to teach grade schools. It required many summer courses for credits to keep qualified to teach.

The Eastern State Normal School was established in Castine in 1867 as part of a statewide system of teachers colleges. The Maine Maritime Academy (MMA) building now known as Dismukes Hall on the MMA campus was built in 1872 and housed classrooms and offices.  Richardson Hall (Leavitt Hall) was built in 1900 as a dormitory and dining facility, and the present Quick Hall, constructed in 1928, was the school’s gymnasium and auditorium.
Maine Maritime Academy shared classroom facilities with ESNS from its founding (as the Maine Nautical Training School) in the fall of 1941 until the Normal School closed in the spring of 1942.

Kenneth Cole bought the “Cole Farm” from Abel Crockett in 1934:

• Abel Crockett received the house by the will of his sister, Esther Grose Gerrish.

• Esther Grose Gerrish received the house from her husband George Grose.

• George Grose received the house from Lowell Gardner in 1888.

• Lowell Gardner received the house from Hiram Heath in 1880.

• Hiram Heath inherited the house from his father Abraham Heath in 1842. It was the “Abraham Heath homestead.” His wife was Arvilla or Belinda.

• Abraham bought (the land? the farm?) from Ebenezer Bancroft, Lot 19 in the 5th Range, Jan. 11, 1815.

Before Kenneth bought the farm, he and Beulah rented another farm on Lower Sumner Hill Rd., which is where Frances was born.

Kenneth’s birth record is on Ancestry.com.
