Will and Harriet Chandler now own the Merrill/Poor house in Andover, what my mother knew from photographs as the "Poor farm." The Chanders were gracious enough to show us the house when Mom and I visited Andover for Olde Home Days in August 2001.

This house was begun by Ezekiel Merrill in 1791, a date that is commemorated on the chimney of the house. It passed to Ezekiel's son Moses, but fell into disrepair. It was eventually repurchased by Henry Varnum Poor, Ezekiel Merrill's grandson by his daughter Mary.

I am pleased to report that the house is now a showpiece in Andover. It can be rented for weddings, and was the setting for the recent film The Myth of Fingerprints. It is only open during the summer, since the house still does not have heating; nevertheless, the setting is gorgeous, and the Chandlers have told us that the house will pass to their children, who love it as much as they do.
