Ephraim Lane was the original owner of Lot # 212,
located in and around Readfield Corner. James Craig who was born in England
in 1740, came to Readfield between 1764, when his son Thomas was born in
England, and 1770 when he signed the petition to incorporate Pondtown (Winthrop).
He purchased lot #212 in 1782, on which there were no buildings at the
time. James Craig built the first sawmill & a grist mill on the
lower dam at Factory Square before 1790, and all roads in this area led
to these mills. James died in Readfield c.1797 and his son, James, assumed
ownership of the mills.

some features of an old house including two foot wide pine floor boards,
wooden pegged beams, and the granite foundation though there has been extensive
inside remodeling.
Thomas was born in Deighton, No. Yorkshire, England on September 27, 1764.
He married first to Rebecca Brown, and second to Rachel Huntoon on January

deed reads "a certain piece or parcel of land situated in Readfield, including
the land belonging to the farm which was owned and occupied by Thomas Craig
late of said Readfield." John O. Craig, son of Thomas & Rachel, married
Sally Turner, daughter of Capt. Christopher Turner an early Readfield settler.
John O. Craig's gravestone in Readfield Corner cemetery refers to him as
Colonel. He died 3-9-1881, and Sally died 8-17-1874.
Their children were entered in the Readfield VR's with two entries. Children
1-6 with first entry naming town of birth. Children 7-11 did not identify
town of birth which would indicate to me that the family left town &
lived in Gardiner for a short time, then returned to Readfield sometime
between 1824-1826.
