Maine Central Railroad and Somerset Railroad

The Depot

The Androscoggin and Kennebec Railroad, now part of the the Maine Central Railroad, came through Oakland in December 1849. When the depot was built, the business center of town shifted from the lake area to the present downtown. This depot was torn down about 1956, and today has been the site of various short-lived businesses.

Somerset Railway
This line, which began in Oakland, ran to Moosehead Lake. Oakland's depot was the transfer place for the many summer visitors to the Kineo Resort on Moosehead.  It was absorbed by the Maine Central Railway in 1904.
