THE TAYLOR FAMILY of VA

Henry W Taylor the first black teacher of Webster was born on 7 Mar 1850 in Warrington, Virginia and died 8 June 1935 ae 85y 3m 1d at Litchfield ME. He was the son of Doctor Thomas & Elizabeth (Hamilton) Taylor. His father was a Physician. Mr Taylor came to Litchfield, Kennebec Co, Maine by train before the civil war or stortly after. He was met by Elias Plimpton at the train station, according to the older citizens in Litchfield, ME. In 1992, the local historians telll us, he worked for the Sanborn Book Co, a school supplies company. A few people still living in 1992, said he was a very highly respected man in the town. He had beauitful or handsome snow white wavey hair. And not all, but a few, would say after cross questioned, "Oh yes, I had forgot, he did have a negro ancestry, as his mother had been a slave." This man was not remember became he was the first black man in town. He was remembered because of his serves and his children's serves to the town. He served on the local school board nearly 60 years, and was for a term Superintendent of the school committee, taught town schools 136 terms. During Litchfield Maine' 100th anniversary he served as the Secretary of the committee. He also served on both the trustee and executive boards of Litchfield Academy. He was a member of the Congregational Church and Order of the Eastern Star and was a past master 1915-1916 and Chaplain 1917-1918 of the Morning Star lodge of Free & Accepted Masons. He settled in Litchfield at age 14 years which was near the end of the Civil War. Henry Taylor m 10 Mar 1874,** Marietta Goodwin b 27 Apr 1850, d 26 Feb 1918 ae 67y 9m 29d, d/o Samuel & Marietta (Thompson) Goodwin. Her mother was born in Halifax MA & her father was born in Boston MA.

  1. Harry Warren b 1 Feb 1875, he was a clerk in a grocery store at Winthrop ME in 1805. of Malden MA in 1918 and later in 1935 of Litchfield;
  2. Walter Goodwin b 20 Dec 1876, d 6 Mar 1880;
  3. Carleton L. b 13 Sept 1885, of Fitchbury in 1918 and later in 1835 at Malden MA;
  4. Amy I./Annie I. b 29 Aug 1887, she was in Litchfields Academy class of 1904 and she was teaching school in Bowdoin ME in 1905, m 26 Dec 1908, at Litchfield ME, Thomas Edwin Moore was ae 23y in 1908, lived in Attleboro MA 1918, 1929 & 1935, he was s/o Edwin & Elizabeth ( ) Moore, his father was a jeweler born in Birmington England, and his mother was born in Derby England.

Harry W/Henry W Taylor - Born ??, d 12 Jan 1955 ae 79y at Dresden Rest Home at Augusta ME, burial at Litchfield Cem s/o ?? Harry W Taylor m 8 Nov 1899, Orissa Leighton b 1877 in Exeter ME, d 21 Feb 1957, occ' a nurse, was sister of Ida E Haskell, who d 20 July 1940, both were the dau's of Alonzo & Marcia (Robinson) Leighton of West Levant ME. Harry Taylor was master of the Morning Star lodge 1933-34 and Chaplain 1937-38. Children: Ida Mildred m _______Hatch? and had one child, Nancy LeCakes who was living in Barrington MA in 1955. [Kennebec Co Probate #34387] Harry Taylor also adopted a child: Virginia Harris, she was living in Augusta in 1955. Carleton L Taylor of Melrose MA, m(1) 5 Jul 1932 Ethel Florence Cooley of Litchfield ME, who was b 16 Feb 1887 in Norridgewock ME, occ' School teacher, d 1 Jul 1954 ae 67y, burial Plains Cem Litchfield, d/o Gustavus & Flavilla R (Holt) Cooley, m(2) 26 Jan 1956, Ina E (Maloon) Hebb of Bowdoin ME, she had m(1) 25 Dec 1920, Ernest F Hebb of Litchfield ME. Carloton's business was eletrical. He was master of the Morning Star Lodge F&AM in 1946. Children: Carleton L Jr was living at 3400 Broad St, Parkersbury, West Virgina.
