The Keen/Keen Family name is from the Gaelic word ceann, the head, top commander or chief. The name appears in early New England records as Keen, Keayne, Cain, Caine, Kean, Keane. The original spelling is Keen, but in the last 100 years Keene has been generally adopted. Among the first who came to America was John Keen, a mariner, who was born in England in 1578. He came in the ship Confidence from Southampton, England, sailing 11 Apr 1638. With him came his wife,(Martha) and their children. He settled in Hingham, MA, where he opened a tavern. He died in 1650, at the age of 72. (see Pioneers of MA page 265; Savage Genealogical Dictionary, Vol 3)

    Josiah KEEN Sr - born 1620 at London Bridge, d 1710 at Duxbury MA, s/o �John �& Martha __ KEEN. Josiah KEEN Sr. moved to Marshfield, MA and there married Abigail Little, dau/o Thomas & Ann (Warren) Little. This Ann Warren was the dau/o Richard Warren of the Mayflower. He married 2nd �Hannah Dingley d 1710 at Duxbury MA d/o John & Sarah �(Pollard) Dingley. Josiah Keen Sr was surveyor in 1666, constable in 1667 and on the grad jury from Duxbury in 1689.     Samuel Keen died 18 May 1777 , the s/o Josiah & Lydia (Baker) Keene, married Ruth Sprague d June 1783 d/o William Sprague.

    Joshua Keen born 13 Dec 1730 at Pembroke, MA, died 11 Feb 1823 at Hebron, ME the son of Nathaniel & Thankful Winslow Keen moved from Pembroke MA and took up land in Hebron, then know as Shepardsfield, ME. According to the Annals of Oxford, Oxford Co, ME, Joshua Keen as a lieutenabt in Capt Ford's Pembroke Company in 1776 in the American Revolutionary War, and it goes on to say that Sprage Keen, whoses name also appears in the army rolls of 1779, was most likely his son, ae 20y, light complexion, 5'7" in stature." However, there is no mention of a son Sprague in the record of Joshua Keen's children, and we are inclined to think that Sprague might have been a cousin, since Joshua Keen's uncle, Samuel Keen married a Ruth Sprague.

    Joshua Keen married Abigail Eams on 14 Dec 1756, who was born 14 Dec 1730, died 25 Oct 1823 at Hebron, ME d/o Joshua & Abigail (Dagget) Eames.
