The Whitehaven Heritage Association

I'd like to introduce you to an organization that, while not affiliated with the Wicomico MDGenWeb or The USGenWeb Project, is a wonderful group that I've come to admire.

The Whitehaven Heritage Association, Inc. is seeking support in its cause. Your support, in the form of membership in the Association, will enable it to pursue its mission, which is to promote the understanding and appreciation of Whitehaven's Heritage, and to preserve it, appropriately, creatively, and meaningfully for the present and the future.

Many of you with roots in Old Somerset/Wicomico Co., MD may be interested in joining the W.H.A. The Association is a group concerned with the history and preservation of the Whitehaven area, on the Wicomico River, just around the bend from the Old Green Hill Church (St. Bartholomew's, Stepney Parish). Whitehaven was a major port and boat building center on the lower Eastern Shore of Maryland in the 17th to 19th centuries. Many of our forebears arrived in this state/country via this little port. At present the Association is concentrating on restoring the old schoolhouse, and supporting the restoration of the National historically registered Whitehaven Hotel. With support from a matching grant, a young couple is investing their own funds to preserve the Hotel as a Bed and Breakfast.

Annual membership dues in the Association are quite inexpensive and include a quarterly newsletter, The Whitehaven Villager, which makes for perfectly delightful reading. Also, some area merchants are offering discounts if you show the W.H.A. membership card.

Dues structure is as follows:

Checks payable to the Whitehaven Heritage Association should be sent to:

Robert C. Hogg, Treasurer
703 Canvasback Court
Salisbury, MD 21804

Contributions to the Newsletter are welcomed. Please send appropriate news items to: Doris Scott, Editor, 2764 Whitehaven Road, Whitehaven, MD 21856, or via email to [email protected]
Editor: Doris Scott      History Editor: David Scott      Nature Corner: Ted Deacon

I can assure you most of you will find the newsletter interesting, informative, amusing, and folksy.

The Whitehaven Heritage Association, Inc. is also asking for any memorabilia of Whitehaven's past which you may have tucked away somewhere for their archives and museum: photographs, news clippings, business ledgers, etc. They especially welcome oral histories and essays.
