MEZICK FAMILY GRAVEYARD

This transcription was done in November of 1987 by my late Uncle Eugene Mezick. He said at that time that these were the graves he could see "through the briars and two feet of ivy". Since that time, the conditions have declined even further, to the point that an attempt to access the graves to do a complete transcription of the stones was impossible to accomplish in August, 1997. The list has been supplemented by Hobart Hughes, who supplied a more complete listing in April, 1995, and again by the CemTrek98 attendees in August of 1998. At this point, we're pretty confident that we have listed all the marked graves. This little cemetery lies back some distance from the south side of Capitola Road, 0.8 miles west of Whitehaven Road, on what is known as "the old Hughes farm".

<bgsound src="wereyou.mid">The music is a beautiful piece called "An Raible Tu Ag An gCarraig" (Were You At The Rock?), obtained from Taylor's Traditional Tunebook.

"God keep his soul! his bones were long since laid
Among the sunken gravestones in the shade
Of those dark-lichened rocks, that wall around
The family burying-ground with cedars crowned:
Where bristling teasel and the brier combine
With clambering wood-rose and the wildgrape-vine
To hide the stone whereon his name and dates
Neglect, with mossy hand, obliterates."

from "The Old Water Mill" by Madison Cawein

Francis Mezick 1805 - 1863 (Francis was the son of Elihu Jr. and Leah [Dougherty] Mezick.)

Ann Mezick 1812 - 1883 (I believe this is Sarah Anne Denson Mezick, wife of Francis.)

John C. D. Mezick 1846 - 1903 (This was John Cadmus D. Mezick, son of Francis and Sarah Anne [Denson] Mezick.)

Easter L. Mezick b. Oct. 28, 1857, d. May 3, 1907 (Wife of John C. D., her name is shown in some records as "Hester". Her maiden name was Esther L. Davis.)

Albert E. Mezick 1842 - 1917 (Albert Emery Mezick, son of Francis and Sarah Anne [Denson] Mezick.)

Julia Mezick 1859 - 1942 (Julia Elizabeth Dickerson Mezick, wife of Albert.)

Sarah Mezick 1836 - 1905 (my Uncle Gene wrote this as "Sarah Mezick + old maid". Does this mean that her headstone identified her as an old maid? She was daughter of Francis and Sarah Anne [Denson] Mezick.)

Ruby Mezick 1881 - 1883

Ira B. Mezick, b. May 10, 1879, d. Jan. 2, 1954 (Ira Mezick was a nationally-known antiques expert who lived next door to the farm upon which this graveyard is located. He was the son of John C. D. and Esther L. [Davis] Mezick.)

Lester L. Mezick, b. Oct. 28, 1857, d. May 3, 1907

Thomas L. Mezick, b. Sep. 10, 1844 - (no death date?)

Annie Mezick, wife of Thomas L., b. Apr. 2, 1853, d. Dec. 3, 1907

Vaughn Mezick, son of Thomas L. & Annie Mezick, b. Dec. 21, 1890, d. Jul. 23 (or 28?), 1893

William Wainwright, b. Aug. 23, 1858, d. Jul. 29, 1938 (Could be William Henry Wainwright, a son of John Cannon and Rose [Mathews] Wainwright)

J. Denson, b. Mar. 21, 1850, d. Jun. 21, 1914

S. J. Denson, b. Nov. 1, 1850, d. Jan. 31, 1930

J. Eldridge Denson, b. Feb. 9, 1876, d. Jul. 12, 1958 (Eldridge Denson was known as "Bud El")

The only children of Francis and Sarah Anne (Denson) Mezick who are not buried here are:

Isaac Francis Mezick, 1839 - 1923, who married Elizabeth Jane White and is buried at St. Johns Methodist Church in Fruitland
Martha A. Mezick, b. 1834, d. ??. I've never come across information on who she married, when she died, or where she is buried.
