ELLIS, HILLMAN, WHITE posted by Shari Handley on Monday, May 14, 2001

My "Captain" Henry WHITE was born 20 Dec 1807 and died 24 Feb 1850. He married Sarah "Sallie" ELLIS (dtr of Elijah and Sarah ELLIS?) in 1828. Their children were Thomas William Hillman WHITE, Mary Elizabeth WHITE, Ann Marie WHITE, Sarah Ellen WHITE, Elizabeth Jane WHITE, Martha Washington WHITE, and Mary Emeline WHITE, born between 1831 and 1845. Henry and Sallie are buried near Shad Point, outside of Salisbury, Wicomico County. I have an old, circa 1920s family tree done for a WHITE Family Reunion that says Henry's parents were Joseph and Polly WHITE. The record of Henry's birth in Stepney Parish records confirms this. A source has said that Polly was a HILLMAN. An old newspaper article about Thomas William Hillman WHITE, also done in the 20s, gives Joseph and Polly's children as Henry, Hamilton, Peter and William. Does any of this ring a bell by any chance?

His siblings were Roger, Ernest, Berdine, Edna May and Newland. Would appreciate any information in regards to him. Thanks in advance.

LARMORE posted by Bob Smith on Saturday, July 7, 2001

I am looking for info that will tie Jacob LARMORE, Stepney Parish, Wicomico Co. to my Jacob Larmore, born in Maryland 1799, died in Franklin Co. Indiana 1844. I believe my Jacob's brother Jesse was born in Stepney Parish in 1805. He also had a brother named Esau Larmore. All these people ended up in Indiana, including the older Jacob Larmore, who was also in Somerset Co. in 1810. The older Jacob was born in 1771 and was married twice. His first wife, I believe, was named Mary. Then in 1813, he married Comfort Jarrret and they moved to Indiana. Any help would be appreciated as I have been stuck for about 2 years now. Thanks for your time.

PARKER, SHOCKLEY posted by Marian Smith on Saturday, July 7, 2001

My ggg grandfather was Quinton SHOCKLEY who married Sallie PARKER in 1862. Through my research, I have found that Quinton was a middle name. His first name was Hezekiah. He may have been the son of Sampson D. and Mary Shockley, but I have been unable to confirm this. If Sampson is Quinton's father, Sampson passed away between 1850 and 1860 (Quinton is listed in the 1860 census for Worcester County, with a Mollie Shockley who is widowed). I believe Mary's mother was also named Mary and she was called Mollie to distinguish between the 2 of them. I have all the information for Quinton's descendants, but would like to be able to find more information/confirmation on Sampson and Quinton's relationship. Does anyone have any information regarding this line of Shockley's? I have the name of Quinton's siblings as well as Quinton and Sallie's children.

DASHIEL, DESHIELDS, HANDY posted by Reta DeShields Parton on Sunday, July 22, 2001

I believe my DASHIEL/DESHIELDS ancestors came from the Maryland/Virginia border area. I am unsure if it is Wicomico area. They say on the 1880 census their parents were born in Virginia. I believe their mother/grandmother may have been a HANDY as my great grandfather's name was Handy. Here is what I know. I will be glad to share what info I have. Daniel (unsure), William b 1808, Handy b 1819, and John b 1824 were in Beech Grove Tennessee in 1838 and left for Oregon. Daniel and William had families and were married. Handy was 19-20 and John was only 15. Both were single. When they reached Arkansas, one of the wifes was with child (I believe William's wife Martha McBride DeShields) and the pregnancy was not going well. So the decision was made to winter in Lead Hill, Arkansas as there was a huge two story cave and plenty of wild game, fresh water. The wagons were pulled into the cave and a community cabin was began at the base of the hill just above the spring. They had traveled the valleys around the Ozark Mountains to the area which is now Branson, Missouri. The story is, William asked Handy each year to continue on to Oregon. Handy had married Nancy Womack who was born in Arkansas and she did not want to go. So each year Handy would say Maybe Next Year. In 1854, William gathered his family together, left his daughter Amanda who was to be married, his son Andrew Maxwell who had married and was working for the Post Office and was the first postmaster for Green Forrest Arkansas, and continued on to Portland Oregon where he started a saw mill, a school, and owned a lot of land. His son, William Jasper, did not like the cold weather and moved to Norwalk, California to begin a lemon and orange grove. (Twin brother and sister of William Jasper were named LemonLee and LemonSter) So I feel the love of fruit growing came from the old William. Many Apple Trees were planted on the farm in Arkansas. Anyway, Handy is my great grandfather and I feel his mother or grandmother may have been a Handy. I have discovered that many Handy's married into the line. I do have a copy of the 3 volume set of Dashiell Family History by Benjamine Dashiell and published in 1929. So far I have not made a connection. I feel I am one generation away from running it all the way back. I just discovered that Virginia and Maryland areas were so close where the Dashiell/Dashield/DeShields were mostly concentrated. I was wondering if you have any information on these brothers. I only have a verbal confirmation of the brother Daniel, but it is very possible. They said Daniel would not wait and continued on and was never heard from again. I will be glad to share what info I have and I have been gathering for 20 years.
