By subscribing in mail mode, you will receive each message as it is sent. After you subscribe, you will receive a welcome message with all necessary instructions.

By subscribing in digest mode, you will receive messages in a group at periodic intervals. After you subscribe, you will receive a welcome message with all necessary instructions.

You must turn off html before you send your message, as Rootsweb does not accept messages in html -- they will be returned to you without going to the list. If you find that you have a problem sending messages to the list, there are two things to check. First, check that you are using the proper address. DO NOT send messages intended for the list to LUTHERAN-ROOTS-L-request; you must use [email protected] instead. Second, check to see that the e-mail address under which you subscribed to the list is the same e-mail address from which you are trying to send your message. The use of aliases is one possible cause for problems experienced in sending messages.

Included below are the resources I am aware of that are available for Lutheran research. Both online and print resources are listed. If you know of any other resources which should be added to this list, please let me know by sending an e-mail to my address ([email protected]).

General Resources
- Cyndi's List - Lutheran - the Lutheran category from Cyndi's List; some of the links mentioned there are also included here
- Lutherans Online Genealogy Exchange -- a general resource for Lutheran genealogy
  - Family Registry -- search by surname
  - Genealogy Message Board -- search by keyword and date
- Lutheran Resource Site -- links to many different synods in the U.S. and Canada
- Churchsurf Churches of the World -- searchable directory of churches of all denominations (not limited to Lutheran), and many different locations, including outside the U.S.
US Resources:
- Synods -- Lutheran churches (at least in the U.S.) are organized into several groups generally known as synods. In order to locate church records, you first need to determine whether the church still exists today. If so, then your first place to look is the church itself, because the church is the most likely repository of records if the church still exists. If the church no longer exists, then your first place to look is with the archives of the various synods. The trick is that you need to know which synod to search. Churches have changed synods before, so you also need to know which synod the church in question belonged to during the time period you wish to search. Once you determine this, you can contact the appropriate synod's archives. The largest synod in the U.S. is the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), followed by the Lutheran Church -- Missouri Synod (LCMS), and then by the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod (WELS). Don't let the names fool you -- location is NOT a good indicator.

There isn't much there yet, but as time goes by, I hope to develop a comprehensive directory of Lutheran churches, both current and historical. If you would like to offer your help in developing the directory for a particular church, a township, city, county, state, etc., please contact me at [email protected]
