You must turn off html before you send your message, as Rootsweb does not accept messages in html. If you find that you have a problem sending messages to the list, there are two things to check. First, check that you are using the proper address. DO NOT send messages intended for the list to Boice-request or Boice-D-request; you must use [email protected] instead. Second, check to see that the e-mail address under which you subscribed to the list is the same e-mail address from which you are trying to send your message. The use of aliases is one possible cause for problems experienced in sending messages.

Contact the List Administrator:

I am the list administrator for the Boice surname list. My name is Mary D. Taffet, and you may contact me at any time for help should you need it. My e-mail address is [email protected]. I cannot promise an immediate answer, but I can promise an answer within a day or two.

My lineage:

John Boice & Anne Cantine > Matthew Cantine Boice & Elizabeth Ennist > Edward Elting Boice & Cornelia Harkness > Ulysses Simpson Grant Boice & Cora Jessie Mathews > James Hillyer Boice & Charlotte Yancey > Charlotte Mathews Boice & Walter Charles Dresser (my Boice line stops here, but my Dresser line continues on).

-----------------------

Origin of the Boice family:

There appears to be more than one origin for the Boice family; what this means is that there were probably multiple original surnames whose spellings were changed over time, and then the changed spellings from the different origins ended up being merged making it seem like there is only one Boice surname, when in fact there appear to be several.

My own Boice line is believed to be of Dutch origin, and was probably spelled Buys or Buies. Other Boice lines appear to be of French origin, and were probably spelled Du Bois. It's also possible that there is a connection to Scotland, as the surname Boice is associated with Clan Watson as a "sept"; the surname Boice may also be associated with Clan Forbes. If you have more specific information regarding the origin, please let me know.

Surname Variants:

A surname variant is one where the name is spelled differently but nevertheless refers to the same family. In some cases variants exist because of errors made by persons transcribing handwritten records (I have seen members of the same family referred to variously as BOICE and BOYCE). In some cases variants exist because census takers or other persons wrote a name the way it sounded, rather than the way it should be spelled (I don't have any examples for Boice). Lastly, surname variants exist because people, from time to time, choose to change the way their name is spelled (I do not have any examples of this for Boice).

Known variants of the Boice surname include:

If you know of other surname variants, please send them to me at [email protected], with an indication of the circumstances under which they appeared.
