VAUGHAN, VAUGHN posted by Margaret T. Hassan on Saturday, June 1, 2002

My VAUGHAN heritage has been traced back to a William VAUGHAN, b. Feb. 23, 1686 in Somerset, Maryland. Legend has it that our original immigrant ancestor came to this country from Wales about the same time as William Penn. He allegedly was given a grant of land in payment of a debt from the King of England, but no one seems to know where that original piece of land was located. I have found evidence of some land deeded to a William VAUGHAN in Westmoreland County, Virginia about 1664. I have also noted that a William VAUGHAN is listed as having immigrated from Virginia to Somerset County in 1671; and who along with a wife named Margaret, had a son named William in 1686. The same William VAUGHAN was evidently suspected of murder in 1675 and was on something called a Tobacco List in 1678. Do you have any information regarding this man or his family? My line of VAUGHANs eventually settled in Sussex County, Delaware.

JONES, MEREDITH, SHOCKLEY posted by Rachel Sawyer on Wednesday, July 3, 2002

I am trying to find the parentage of a couple married in Dames Quarter, Somerset County, MD, David A. SHOCKLEY, born June 12, 1832 (parents unknown but birth certificate lists his father as Underwood) and Mary Adeline JONES (her death certificate lists her father as Edward H. JONES and mother as Susan). Mary Adeline JONES (SHOCKLEY) was born Dec. 10, 1839 in Dames Quarter, Somerset County, MD. The only marriage that would fit for an Edward H. JONES and a Susan would be the one to Susan MEREDITH dated Nov. 25, 1837 in Somerset County. However, I have no further info on this couple or any possible children to their marriage. I would be most appreciative to hear from anyone with info on any of these individuals in and around Deal's Island, Dames Quarter, Somerset County.

CHENOWETH, GIBBS, HADRIGE, HARDREDGE, HORSEY, SAVON, SHARON, SMITH posted by Carol Wright on Thursday, July 18, 2002

I have a copy of a copy of a Bible. Our relatives on two sides of one family come from Maryland. Mary HARDREDGE (HADRIGE) has a sister Martha and they are the only children to their parents. They lived on the sea coast of Maryland. Mary m. Joseph SHARON (SAVON). The ( ) are the names typed in the death registry on Mary Eliza, our relative. I can't find their marriage information and I am wondering if their names are spelled even more different then we have. In the Bible it is written that after their third child they moved to Chariton, MO. They travelled over the Cumberland Mountains. Cynthia and Elizebeth were born in North Carolina (according to census info), and Katie may have been born in Maryland. Other children listed are Patsy, Moses, Caroline and Mary Eliza (b. in MO in 1826). Mary Eliza m. in 1845 Barna G. GIBBS b. in IN. I am also looking for the family of HORSEY SMITH from Maryand. It doesn't give the first names and I decided that they were surnames. I looked in Somerset's marriage site and found Edward H. SMITH m. Nancy Waller HORSEY June 4, 1799. Our relative Nancy W. Smith m. Barna G. GIBBS, Sr. Aug 27,1818 Scioto Co., OH. Nancy had a brother named Edward. Nancy also had Hiram, Sally and Ellen as her siblings. In the Bible, some of the males in the GIBBS family have the middle name CHENOWETH and we have found out that Nancy's sister, Elisabeth, we believe she is the one. Elisabeth, b.in MD, m.Richard CHENOWETH,in Pike Co., OH, and their children's names are similar to Nancy's. I would like to know more about these families. Peace to you and yours.

MITCHELL, PARKES, PARKS posted by Diane Talton Rehm on Saturday, August 10, 2002

I am looking for an Arthur PARKS or PARKES who married Nancy MITCHELL July 24,1801 in Somerset Co., MD. I am interested in who his parents were, when he was born, who his siblings were, when he died, and where he is buried. I have read Arthur PARKS was from Deal Island, but am not sure. One of his sons, Thomas S. Parks, is my great-grandfather, and he lived and is buried in Accomack Co., VA.

GODDARD posted by Betty Goudy Cronin on Thursday, August 15, 2002

Francis Lane GODDARD lived in Somerset during the Revoluntary War. How can I find if he served on the Council of Safety? He died in Sussex Co, DE in 1794, so would have been too old for the military.
