Captured by Confederate soldiers, he was a prisoner of war in Libby
Prison in
Richmond, VA.
During a prisoner of war exchange in 1864, he returned to Camp Parole
in
Annapolis, Maryland,
where he died in the U.S. General Hospital as a result of his wounds
and
malnutrition.
His grave (Tombstone No. 912) is in the U.S. Ash Grove Cemetery which
later
became the Annapolis National Cemetery.

Acted as his father, Captain Ebenezer Witter's, waiter in the
Revolution for
some months in 1776
and was later a private in his father's company. He was also a private
in
Captain William Whitney's company
Colonel Oliver Smith's Connecticut regiment, and was in the Battle of
Newport
as a member of General Sullivan's Rhode Island expedition.
In the spring of 1779 he enlisted as a private in Captain Boseman's
and
Captain Ebenezer Witter's companies, under Colonel William Ledyard at
Fort
Griswold.
February, 1780, he again entered service as a gunner on board the
Massachusetts
ship of war, "Discovery,"
commanded by Captain Francis Brown, and in October following was in a
severe
battle with two English vessels
near the coast of France. After eight months' service, he entered the
French
naval service
in which he continued until the close of the Revolution, when he
returned home
to Preston
