• Letter: To Pauline Fink, from Robert M. Greene, Jr, 22 Aug 2000, Whiteny Point, Broome County, New York, United States. 13 Dear Pauline,
I think that I will not be of much help to you, but I'll tell you what I know about the McManigle.
As far as I know, I am not related to the McManigles, but I have done some research regarding James McManigle. I became interested in him because he and his wife Mary E. are buried in Greene Cemetery, a family cemetery on the farm where I was raised. Some of my ancestors are buried there. My great grandfather and his wife, Isabella Vasbinder established a farm in the second hollow west of Brookville on Rte. 322. My great grandfather's name was William Poorman Green. This was about 1850.
Isabelle's father, Andrew Vasbinder, married Nancy Clements. They had five children before Nancy died in 1850. Andrew then married Elizabeth Nulf. He was 67, and she was 22. They had five children. Andrew died 1878.
James McManigle's wife, Mary E. died August 20, 1878, age 50 years. On Feb. 20, 1879 James married Elizabeth Vasbinder. To the best of my search James and Elizabeth had two children, Archie J. born September 6, 1879 and Maude M. born May 12, 1882.
I new a Barbara McManigle who attended Green School when I did. I'll enclose a picture of a McManigle family that lived near Alaska, a small hamlet north of Brookville. Barbara's father was Frank.
It may be of interest to you, James Vasbinder married Margaret Fink. I knew two of their children, Mattie and John.
I wish you success.
Sincerely,
Robert M. Greene, Jr. (signed)

• Letter: To Pauline Fink, from Robert M. Greene, Jr, 4 Sep 2000. 13 Dear Pauline,
I will do my best to answer your questions.
The Green Cemetery where James and Mary E. McManigle now reside is located on Green Lane in Rose Township, Jefferson County. I am not aware ot two Greene Cemeteries.
To visit Greene Cemetery you must go north on Rte. 36 from Rte. 322. Turn left on Maplevale road, which is about 1/4 mile north of Rte. 322. Proceed westerly on Maplevale for about 1 mile. There you will find Green Lane to your left. Proceed southerly on Green past the residence of Dan Ficus, through the woods. Greene Cemetery is on your right at the edge of the woods. About 300' to the south of Green Lane is blocked by I-80. I was born in the little house which may still be visible from the cemetery. The house is on the south side of I-80.
In this cemetery you will find the two headstones of the McManigles. One is marked, "Mary E., w/o James McManigle, died 8/20/1878, 50 y." To the left of Mary E. is a headstone marked, "James McManigle, died 10/13/1890, Co. I, 148 Reg., P.V."
I have not been able to find Mary E.'s maiden name. I did look for a marriage, but they may have been married out of Jefferson County. I sure would like to know Mary's background! I have been told the story that they liked the location of Greene Cemetery and asked my great grandfather for permission to be buried there. To the best of my knowledge the Greene's were not related to the McManigles.
There was a Mary E. Vasbinder, but she died at the age of 18, 2/18/1877.
If you have Pat Steele's "Tombstone Hoppin'", she did miss the McManigles, and recorded the wrong date for Rosie B. Undercoffer's death. Rosie died in 1922.
In your First Lutheran Church records is there not mention of James marriage?
Benjamin Divler married Sara Catherine Green. They had a son, Mack Diebler, who had a son, Max Diebler. A discarded headstone in the rear of the Greene Cemetery bears the name of Benjamin Dibler. I have been told that the Diebler is the old German spelling of that name and that Mack like that while his parents preferred Divler. Sara was my grandfather's sister. If there is a connection of Mary E. McManigle to the Greens, I have not found it. The McManigles were neighbors to the Greens. The McManigles had a farm in the first hollow west of Brookville, and the Greens were in the second hollow to the west of Brookville.
There is a 4 year difference in your Church records of James birth. His pension application gives his birth date at 1824.
James was not slightly wounded. He was severely wounded. I'll enclose my record of it.
Did Solomon McManigle live in the Greensburg area? My account of James shows that he enlisted at Seigle, PA, which is nine miles north of Brookville, and Greensburg is 80 miles to the south. I know athat these old fellows traveled a lot. My Great Grandfather William Poorman Green came to Brookville from Milesburg, a distance of about 80 miles. Much lumbering was done in Jefferson County in the 1800's and rafts of it were floated to Pittsburgh. This could have drawn James to the north,
Have you tried the Family History Centers of the Mormons?
Best Wishes.
Sincerely,
Robert M. Greene, Jr. (signed)

note from Reverend Paul M. Ruff: Pauline, the records found so far cover 21 years. There are two periods in which births are not listed for the family. That is from 1811 to 1817 and 1820 to 1828. So far I have not checked confirmation records for the family. Sometimes that will give more information. I shall be on the alert for additional records that could be of help.
