This is a family that has come up over and over again in my research.  They are not kin to me as far as I can determine but I found the Civil War Pension application of Stephen to the State of Texas and could not locate a person in anyones research to correspond to this person.  However, I finally located a Stephen L. McCanless in several files and found that on one document someone transcribed his middle initial as an L and it stuck.  This family was in Texas for two generations after Samuel.

Well, that was not all of the story, I got cemetery records and things that kept showing up but finally someone posted a message on a query board that they found a picture in junk shop in the Pacific Northwest and it was the family of Stephen Samuel McCanless.  So here is one of the pictures that was found.
