Eddie Egan found the portrait below is of his family taken at a reunion party honoring his gggrandfather for his civil war service.  Also honored with Robert (on the right) was Joseph Cannan.  They took two pictures of the two vets with their families, one with the McCandless descendants and one with the Cannans so all the people in this picture with the two vets are McCandless family members.

Robert's father was David McCandless born circa 1812 in Malin, Co. Donegal Ireland.  He married Mary Platt September 9, 1841 and they had 6 kids. Three were born in Ireland,  John in 1844, Mary Platt McCandless in 1845 and then Robert on June 2, 1847.  Then about 1848 they immigrated to ELIZABETH, NEW JERSEY where they had three more girls... Jane, Elizabeth, and Rebecca.  Robert had 13 children and with the exception of Eddie's great grandmother, Louise Finnerty, Eddie has no idea what happened to the rest.   Robert died June 3, 1945.
