Husband's General Notes

Per History of Kanawha County, by George Atkinson, @1876: he was owned by Samuel Galloway and when 8 years old was sold to James Gilkerson of Scott Co, KY. At age 28 he brought suit for his freedom under the laws of PA, which said all slaves born after the Declaration of Independence were to be made free at age 28, later changed to 21. His lawyer was Richard M. Johnson, later Vice-President of the U.S. After winning his freedom, he came to Kanawha Co. where he lived for the rest of his life.
