Per Laidley, pg. 220, in an article on Union District of Kanawha Co, WV: "The first school taught in the district was by James Rust, in the year 1817, in a cabin on Pocatalico river, eleven miles from its mouth. There were but five pupils in attendance, and these Mr. Rust taught gratuitously." (This may refer to another James Rust, a son perhaps.)

Wednesday April 4, 1894

Poca
V. R. Rust, an old ans respected citizen of Putnam County, was buried the 1st, at the Rust Cemetery. He owned a large and valuble farm, one mile above Poca. He leaves a family consisting of Mrs. Walls, the wife of Dr. Walls and step-daughter, Mrs. Schultz. The funeral services were conducted by Elder W. A. Melton. There was quite a large crowd in attendance, among whom were a good many from Poca. We extend our sympathy to the family of the deceased.
