DEATH OF MRS. RACHEL ELLEN PATTON AFTER A LINGERING ILLNESS
Mrs. Rachel Ellen Patton, wife of Col. Oliver Patton, died yesterday evening at 6:30 at the Thomas hospital in this city, of a malignant disease of the stomach. She had been a patient sufferer for eighteen months, and everything that medical skill could do for her was done.
Mrs. Patton was the daughter of William Tompkins and his wife, and was born at the family home at Burning Springs, this county September 22, 1844. She became the wife of Col. Oliver Patton April 30, 1867. Besides her husband she leaves four children, Mrs. Amanda Ratliff, of Deepwater; Miss Alice, William T. and John Preston Patton; also four brothers, William Tompkins of this city; J.G.W. and H. P. Tompkins, of Cedar Grove and Charles Tompkins of Salem, Virginia, and two sisters, Mrs. T. B. Swann, of this city and Mrs. John C. Brown, of Lewisburg.
Mrs. Patton was a consistent member of the first Presbyterian church, and was ever a devoted servant to her savior.
