May 27, 1831
Died at his residence in this county, on the 17th inst. in the 81st year of his age, Mr. Leonard Morris, after a long and painful illness. Mr. Morris was one of the first settlers in the Valley of Kanawha, and was extensively known and respected.

Per 1810 Kanawha Co, VA annotated census, pg 31: "He came with his family to the Kanawha Valley c1773/4 but returned to Culpeper Co, VA because the land he had selected & claimed was in the western end of the Teays Valley & the Indians were still troublesome. A Monument in the Cabell Co. courtyard lists him as a Revolutionary War soldier. He is said to have been a reliable man of good judgement. He returned to Kanawha Valley c1800. ...... Their children are listed in Joshua's will which is recorded in the First Record Book of Kanawha Co."
