Husband's General Notes
Carl McCormack changed the spelling of his name from McCormick when he was about 18 years old.. An old Family Bible had the spelling as "McCommac". Carl said that his grandmother, Grandma Mooney, told him that they were spelling their name wrong and that it was spelled with an "a" and not "i".
Carl loved to read and as a child, maintained a personal library of Edward Rice Borough's Tarzan books and Zane Grey western novels which he loan to his friends. While in his early teen years Carl sent off for music lessons that were advertised in a comic book. From the lessons he learned to play the mandolin and other string instruments. His brother Virgil learned to play the guitar in a similar manner. Carl's favorite songs were "Under the Double Eagle" and "Red Wing".
For forty-two years Carl worked at Kelly Ax Factory which was located on north bank of Kanawha River just west of the Patrick Street Bridge. He made his living on a grinding wheel, grinding the neck of hammers. In those days the necks of hammers were hand ground to an octahedral shape. A few years before he retired, Kelly Ax Factory was bought out by True Temper Corporation. The factory was later moved to Tennessee.
Carl was an avid fisherman and hunter and hardly ever turned down a chance to do one or the other.
Carl and his wife, Maudenna, lived nearly all of the married live at 1309 Beech Avenue, Charleston, West Virginia. Initially, Carl and Maudenna rented the house but later they purchased it. The house was owned by Maudenna's parents, who lived at 1307 Beech Avenue.
