Apparently, the original last name was "Marsh", which is how it appears in the Orange Co, VA marriage record and the 1850 Putnam Co, (W)VA census. However, all other records in Putnam Co, WV: marriage records, census records, and cemetery records,etc. use the spelling "Mash" (pronounced "Mahsh" ; does not rhyme with "ash".) which is the southern "soft r". (For example, in some records in the late 1800's, the last name "McCormick" was spelled "McCommac".)
