Per West Virginia Newspapers Obituaries 1884-1894, Vol. 2, pg. 100:

The Clarksburg Telegram
Saturday December 6, 1890
Charleston, W. Va., November 27

James S. Monk, one of the best known citizens of this county, met death in a horrible manner yesterday at the mouth of Coon Creek, near Sissonville. He was engaged in hauling logs and had gone to the mouth of the creek with two logs on his wagon. With the help of his son he had unloaded one of them, when suddenly the other one rolled off the wagon, crushing his head between the two. The log was eighteen feet long, eighteen inches in diameter, and came down with such force as to crush his head into a shapeless mass, killing him instantly.
