General Notes for Child Thomas R. Hope
From the Preface to the book, 1850 Putnam Co. VA Census, published by the Upper Vandalia Historical Society:
The 1850 Census was taken two years after the formation of Putnam County. Thomas R. Hope was the census taker whose flourished and embellished penman ship was not always the easiest to decipher. He was a 27-year-old Red House merchant who had come from Kentucky with his wife and young child only the year before.
The record indicates that Thomas Hope began his enumeration on July 4th and finished the entire county by August 7th. This must have been a remarkable accomplishment considering the distances he had to travel between the isolated farms and that a horse was his only means of transportation.
(Two paragraphs discussing mis-spellings old family names and problems with the WPA project workers from the 1930's and further transcription errors, and a statement to the effect that this is a copy of the WPA work and although errors were found, they were not corrected.)
An interesting sidelight of Putnam County's census was how it apparently changed the life of Tom Hope, the young census taker. Shortly after he received his pay from the government, he sold his store and took his family back to Kentucky. As soon as he could manage to get them situated with relatives, he took a steamboat to Missouri and from there headed for California.
He had caught the "gold fever" and had staked his entire capital on "striking it rich" in the great California Gold Rush. When he reached California, however, things began to go from bad to worse. Not able to find any gold, his money was soon gone and to add to his woes, he came down with a seige of camp fever. Finding himself far from home, out of money and sick, he sank into a deep depression from which he died- the victim of his own hand.
