Here's the story on Ballard- He was hired by Nathaniel Wilson, husband of Elizabeth Ruffner, heir to wealth, salt works Ruffner family, to manage their farm in Malden, Kanawha Co. VA/WV. He and Celis Elswick had two sons, Nathaniel and James Preston before Ballard "went off to war". While we do find Ballard's CSA record, we do not find his death or service at Droop Mountain. He mysteriously appears in the 1880 Mercer Co. WV census, while Celia or "Seely" appears in the Big Sandy District living with Nathaniel Wilson who had left his life.
