On the 28th of December, of pneumonia, at the residence of Maj. J. H. Thompson, Marion, Smythe county, Virginia in the 89th year of his age, Joseph Friend Esq., formerly of Kanawha county, West Virginia.

November 5, 1842
Died in this place, on the 26th of October, Mrs. Julia Friend, consort of Joseph Friend Esq.
Mrs. Friend was in her 54th year of age; and a few persons at her period of life have a fairer prospect of length of days than she had, until a short time previous to her decease. Her disease was congestive bilious fever. In the death of this excellent lady, her family, her neighbors, and the community at large have sustainrd a heavy loss. In the discharge of the duties of her station she was without reproach, as a wife, a mother and a neighbor. For many years Mrs. Friend had been a professor of religion and a member of the Presbyterian Church.
