March 11, 1843
Died at her residence in Kanawha County, three miles from Charleston, on Saturday the 4th inst., Mrs. Jane Burgess, wife of Maj. Edward Burgess, in the 78th year of her age. This worthy matron had experienced a large share of infirmity for several years, but the disease which brought her thus maturely to her grave was a paralytic stroke, accompanied by apoplexy, which speedily terminated her life.
Mrs. Burgess was born in Hanover County, Virginia and in early life became a respectable member of the Methodist Episcopal Church. She emigrated to Kanawha in the year 1806, where she has resided ever since.
Shortly after her location in Kanawha she rejoined the Methodist Church, when Methodism was first introduced in this valley, and ever after lived, as she died, a worthy member of the same. She was a loving wife, a tender and affectionate mother, a kind mistress, and a charitable neighbor.
