Bill Proper at a Canadian Fiddle Contest

 This is the line my maternal grandfather William E. Proper. Known as Bill, he was a lumberman and antique dealer by trade. And, for fun, he played his fiddle. Like many in the family, he taught himself how to play. My grandmother accompanied him on the piano, guitar, or accordion. They loved to entertain and we spent many nights in their small frame home listening to them play till early morning. Gramp participated in Old Time Fiddler contests in the USA and Canada. He was a hunter and loved to fish for trout in the small streams near their home in Grand Valley, in northwestern Pennsylvania.

Bill and Viola loved to travel and they formed friendships from Canada to the southern states. Sometimes he went on fishing trips to Canada. During the cold winters, they enjoyed traveling to warmer climates with their travel trailer. They had many friends and their home was always ready for company.
