John NEWTON was born 1639 in Yorkshire, England, the son of Thomas NEWTON. He was first married to Joan BARR.

The only child to live to maturity of this marriage was:

• John II, NEWTON, born circa 1657; died before 1697; married Mary ALLERTON, daughter of Isaac ALLERTON and Elizabeth WILLOUGHBY OVERZEE COLCLOUGH.

According to the deposition of John's daughter Elizabeth, he had a child by a second wife:

• Joseph, NEWTON, born 1666, married Sarah PRICE BUTLER, widow.

John was married to Elizabeth Laycocke and they were the parents of:

• Benjamin NEWTON, born 1669, died 1710; married Mary GRIGSBY.

After the death of Elizabeth, John emigrated to the colonies where he married Rose. We do not know the maiden name of Rose but she was married first to John TUCKER. Rose and John TUCKER had four known children:

1. Sarah TUCKER, born 2 August 1663, married William FITZHUGH.
2. Rose TUCKER, married Ebenezer BLACKISTONE
3. John TUCKER
4. Gerrard TUCKER (born after his father died)

Rose later married Dr Thomas GERRARD. There were no known children of this marriage although Gerrard TUCKER was born after their marriage.

Children of John NEWTON and Rose (--?--) were as follows:

1. Gerrard Tucker NEWTON, born abt 1671; died before 1706; married Rebecca BLACKISTON.
2. Thomas NEWTON, born 1678; married Elizabeth STORKE.
3. Elizabeth NEWTON, born 1685; died 1763, Westomoreland Co, VA; married 1. Thomas GILSON; 2. Benjamin BERRYMAN

John Newton died before 1697 and Rose died before 1712/13.
