Patton George WHITED [Parents] was born 25 Sep 1840 in Russell Co., VA. He died 8 Dec 1900 in Los Angeles, CA and was buried in Calvary Cemetery, Los Angeles, CA. Patton married Ellen Lenore ROMERO.

Patton G. Whited was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor on April 27, 1877.  His citation was received for Gallantry in Action during the western Indian Wars while fighting Sitting Bull's Sioux.  Place and date: At Cedar Creek, etc., Montana.,  October 21, 1876 to January 8, 1877 (it is very cold in Montana at that time of year).  Although it was created for the Civil War, Congress made the Medal of Honor a permanent decoration in 1863.  Only about 3,400 men and one woman have received the award for heroic actions in the nation's battles since that time.  Story has it that Patton went to get some much needed water for his unit and retrieved the water despite the fact that he was being fired upon by the Indians.

Patton was also in the Civil War for the Union army.  He enlisted in the U. S. Army in Kentucky prior to the Civil War and was a career soldier.

On June 19, 1900, Patton was in the "National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers" in Pacific Branch, Los Angeles County, California.  He died later that year.

Military record:

Rank and organization: Private, Company C, 5th U.S. Infantry. Place and
date: At Cedar Creek, etc., Mont., 21 October 1876 to 8 January 1877.
Entered service at: ------. Birth: Russell County, Va. Date of issue: 27
April 1877. Citation: Gallantry in action.

Ellen Lenore ROMERO 1 was born 22 Feb 1852 in New Mexico. She died 12 May 1909 in California and was buried in Calvary Cemetery, Los Angeles, CA. Ellen married Patton George WHITED.

Ellen was said to have been an Indian woman from New Mexico.  Her maiden name is known to be Romero from her son George's death record.  Mary's death record listed Ellen's maiden name as Ramero, however Romero appears to be the correct spelling.

The 1870 Census stated she was Mexican.  Some of Patton's peers liked to poke fun at him for marrying an Indian.  They called him "squaw man."

They had the following children:

M i George Blanco WHITED was born 29 Jul 1869 and died 31 Jan 1942.

Eugene Alfred BERT [Parents] "Gene" was born 25 Mar 1922 in California. He died 30 Mar 2009 in Pennsylvania. Gene married Nancy LEAMAN.

Gene's given birth name was Eugene Emory Bert, however his name was recorded incorrectly as Eugene Alfred Bert.  Rather than correct it, he decided to keep the name Eugene Alfred Bert.  Gene was in foster homes after his mother died.  He then lived with his grandmother for a while.  He was listed in her household in the 1930 Census in San Bernardino Co., CA.  Later, he ran away from home and got a steady job and continued his education.  Rather than prosecute him, the authorities decided to let his employer be his guardian because he was working, going to school and staying out of trouble.

Eugene Alfred Bert entered the U.S. Army in December 1942 and was sent to Camp Roberts CA.   He then went to jump school at Ft. Benning, GA, and then was assigned to the 503rd Regimental Combat Team in the Pacific Theater.   He jumped at Corregador.   After WWII, he was a civilian for a while the reentered the Army in January 1947 and was assigned to the Signal Corps.   He spent a total of 12 years in the Orient, including the Korean War. He was purposely kept in Pusan away from the front.   He was a spy in China for 3 years.  He met his wife, Nancy Leaman, (who was also in the service) at Ft. Sheridan, IL.   He then went to Kagnew Station, Asmara, Eritrea in 1958.   He was then assigned to White House Communications in 1958 and remained at the Whited House until his retirement in Nov. 1965.   He was a SFC-E7 at that time.   He is the great grandson of Patton G. Whited.

Gene and Nancy Bert lived in Africa for a few years.  They eventually settled in Pennsylvania.
