LIBRARY ARTICLE EXPLAINED
Marvin Tolf, Chairman of the Library Trustees, explained Article 24, which calls for $3,000 for preliminary plans for an addition to the Acton Memorial Library in Acton Center. He stated that the town definitely needs more library space. He explained that when the article was put on the warrant, it was the opinion of the trustees that an addition would be the best approach. However, "We have recently received the report of the library consultant we hired to make a report on what we should do, and he has come out emphatically afgainst an addition, favoring a new building, located on land propsed to be taken by the municipal building committee." The Library Consultant stated that this building should be built on two acres of land, near the schools. Mr. Tolf indicated that "there are legal questions involved in determining what is to become of [the] present library, which was given to the town by W. A. Wilde, who also willed $9,000 in trust funds. A possible out is to make the new building, if one is built, on the one in Acton Center, and set that one up as a historical library." He reminded his listeners that "the consultant is not an architect and we want to be sure we are on the right track. Therefore, present thinking is to amend Article 24, if Article 17 is passed, to provide money for preliminary plans for either an addition or a new building."
